You need to visit your Ford dealer at least once a year for service to keep the car or truck running as smoothly as it can. The technician working on your Ford will look at the tires during this service and let you know if they need replacing. You should also keep an eye on the tires in between visits and check for problems yourself, so you can get new tires ASAP.
1. You’ve Driven Over 25,000 Miles
Ford recommends changing your tires every 25,000 to 50,000 miles. If you’ve driven that much, then you should ask about getting your tires replaced at your next service, as your technician may recommend changing them sooner rather than later. You should also begin looking out for the rest of the signs on this list if you’ve driven at least 25,000 miles.
2. You’re Having Frequent Leaks or Punctures
Older tires may leak from the valve stem more often, and they can be more prone to punctures, too. Sometimes punctures can be patched and keep on driving with the same tire, but other times, it’s best to replace the tire completely. Watch out for falling tire pressure, as that’s a sure sign of escaping air.
3. Your Tires Have Bulges and Bubbles
It’s good practice to visually inspect your Ford every couple of weeks. If you notice your tires have bulges or bubbles, then it’d be a good idea to replace those tires as soon as you can. Look out for cracks, too, as cracking tires should also be replaced soon.
4. Your Ford Is Harder to Handle
If you’re starting to experience rough handling, especially on slippery surfaces, then it could be a sign that your tires don’t have as much traction as they used to. This can be dangerous, especially in wet and icy weather, so you’ll want to get those tires replaced as soon as you can.
5. Your Tires Fail the Penny Test
If you’ve driven over 25,000 miles, then you should start doing the penny test regularly. Insert a penny into the tread, and check how much of Lincoln’s head you can see. If you can see his whole head, then you need to replace those tires.
6. Your Tires Are Vibrating
If your tires are vibrating, even when you’re driving on smooth surfaces, then there could be something wrong with your wheel alignment, your suspension, or something else. Problems that make your wheels or tires vibrate can end up damaging the tires, so you might need to have them replaced while getting the underlying issue fixed.
