Over the years, Ford has cooked up some wild Mustangs, but none comes close to the 2025 Ford Mustang GTD. Built to blur the line between street and race cars, the Mustang GTD is a no-holds-barred performance supercar.
1. Carbon Fiber Everything
One of Ford’s boldest goals for the Mustang GTD was to outpace the very race cars that inspired it. To pull that off, the GTD leans heavily on carbon fiber. Just about every surface that could be lightened up, like body panels, fenders, hood, front splitter, roof, and cover (replaces the trunk lid), gets the carbon fiber treatment. Even the driveshaft is made from carbon fiber, all in the name of sharper handling, quick acceleration, and serious speed.
2. Purpose-Developed V8
At the heart of every Mustang beats a V8, but the GTD’s engine is on another level. It’s a tuned-up version of the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 from the outgoing Mustang Shelby GT500, now pushing for 815 horsepower (compared with 760 hp in the Shelby) and 664 pound-feet of torque. According to Ford, this beast can reach a 202-mph top track speed.
To offset the weight of that monster up front and improve overall balance, the Mustang GTD engineers moved the transmission to the rear, creating a rear-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch transaxle. This setup helps achieve an almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution. Oh, and Ford also fitted a dry-sump oil system, essential for keeping that V8 properly lubricated during high-G cornering and extended track sessions.
3. Semi-Active Pushrod-Actuated Suspension
Developed with racing experts Multimatic, the GTD’s suspension setup is nothing short of race-ready. The shocks and springs are repositioned lower than usual and work in tandem with a motorsport-style tubular sub-frame for better balance and stiffness. At the center of it all are the Adaptive Spool Valve dampers at all four corners, which can adjust from street comfort to track domination in just 15 milliseconds.
4. Trunk Full of Vital Components
Ford figured you’d need more than just horsepower to keep the Mustang GTD running hard lap after lap, so they turned the trunk into a high-performance command center. Instead of luggage space, you’ll find the transaxle, a big titanium muffler, and a dedicated cooling system for the transaxle.
